Legal News from Nigeria




The following Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria have retired this year having attained the statutory age of 70 years.

• Hon. Justice George Adesola Oguntade, C.O.N retired on 10/03/2010
• Hon. Justice James Ogenyi Ogebe,C.O.N. retired on 22/3/2010
Other Justices of the Supreme Court that will retire this year upon attaining the statutory age of 70 years:
• Hon. Justice Niki Tobi, JSC, CON will retire on 14th July, 2010.
• Hon. Justice Ikechi Francis Ogbuagu, JSC,CON will also retire this year.

NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVES

Elections were on 29th July 2010 held into National Offices of the N.B.A. and the following persons have emerged as the executive officers of the Nigerian Bar Association:
• PRESIDENT - Mr. J. B. Daudu, SAN
• 1st VICE PRESIDENT- Blessing Ukiri
• 2nd VICE PRESIDENT- Udobong Iniabasi
• 3rd VICE PRESIDENT – Dr. Ogugua Ikpee
• GENERAL SECRETARY – Olumuyiwa Akinboro
• TREASURER – Olufunmi Oluyede
• FINANCIAL SECRETARY- Adekunle Ajasa
• WELFARE SECRETARY – Sule Sulaiman
• PUBLICITY SECRETARY – Emeka Obegolu
• LEGAL ADVISER – Victor Nwaugo
• 2nd ASSISTANT SECRETARY - Paul Ebiana
• ASSISTANT FINANCIAL SECRETARY - Chinwe Nwadike

NEW DIVISIONS OF THE COURT OF APPEAL
The president of the court of appeal recently announced the creation of new divisions of the Court of Appeal in Ado-Ekiti, Akure and Makurdi.

New Justices for Court of Appeal and judges for High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
President Goodluck Jonathan, on Tuesday 13th July, approved the appointment of 14 Justices for the Court of Appeal and eight judges for high court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The 14 justices are Justice Abubakar Alkali, formerly of Adamawa State High Court of Justice; Justice Joseph Ikyegh, formerly of Benue State High Court of Justice, Justice Tom Yakubu, formerly of Kogi State High Court of Justice; Justice Joseph Tur, formerly of Benue State High Court of Justice and Justice Rita Pemu, formerly of Delta High Court of Justice.
Others are Justice Philomena Ekpe, formerly of Cross River High Court of Justice; Justice Chinwe Iyizoba, formerly of Anambra High Court of Justice; Justice Haruna Tsammani, formerly of Bauchi State High Court of Justice; Justice Samuel Oseji, formerly of Delta High Court of Justice and Justice Mohammed Danjuma, formerly of Taraba High Court of Justice.
They also include Justice Ita Mbaba, formerly of Akwa Ibom High Court of Justice; Justice Akeju Olufemi, formerly of Ekiti High Court of Justice; Justice Tunde Awotoye, formerly of Osun High Court of Justice and Justice Moore Adumein, formerly of Bayelsa High Court of Justice.
The judges for the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory are Mrs. Veralyn Venda, formerly of Director of Civil Litigation, Benue State Ministry of Justice; Mohammed Kolo, formerly Secretary, Judicial Service Commission, Federal Capital Territory, Angela Otaluka, Deputy Chief Registrar, Court of Appeal, Enugu Division, and Abba Mohammed, Legal Adviser, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Others are Valentine Ashi, Senior Lecturer, Nigerian Law School, Mrs Ajoke Adepoju, formerly Deputy Chief Registrar 1, FCT High Court of Justice, Usman Musale, formerly Chief Registrar, Supreme Court of Nigeria and Yusuf Halilu, a private legal practitioner.
The justices and the judges were sworn in on the 15th 0f July 2010 by Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu, Chairman, National Judicial Council .

Hon . Justice Niki Tobi J.S.C. retired from the Supreme Court after reaching the mandatory age of 70 on Wednesday 14th July 2010
